Designing Circularity and All Things Circular Exhibitions

Hong Kong Design Centre and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in
Hong Kong and Macao Present: ‘Designing Circularity’ and ‘All Things Circular’ Exhibitions

DX design hub, a destination for design, showcases two exhibitions advancing ESG goals
through the power of circular design

The ‘Designing Circularity’ and ‘All Things Circular’ exhibitions are jointly presented by Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hong Kong and Macao, with the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) as Lead Sponsor . Both exhibitions will be on view at DX design hub this autumn: ‘Designing Circularity’ from 27 August to 24 November 2025, and ‘All Things Circular’ from 8 September to 24 November 2025.

Reigniting collaborations with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hong Kong and Macao from the Business of Design Week 2023 and the Dutch Design Week, the exhibitions feature a curated selection of works that explore the transformative power of circularity, a key principle driving sustainable innovation and advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.

Designing Circularity: A Sustainable Design Dialogue Between the Netherlands and Hong Kong
Co-curated by Dutch designer Sjoerd Hoekstra and Hong Kong architectural designer Hoi Chi Ng of Hong Kong-based Design for Culture, together with Dutch designer Simone de Waart from Material Sense based in Eindhoven, ‘Designing Circularity’ returns with fresh insights since its 2023 debut at Central Market, presenting new perspectives and pioneering ideas inspired by one of today’s greatest challenges: the overconsumption of Earth’s resources. Since we only have one Earth, it is imperative to rethink how we live, work, play, and do business to ensure a sustainable future.

This exhibition showcases inspiring examples from the Netherlands and Hong Kong that demonstrate how designers, architects, and entrepreneurs are actively shaping this future. By reimagining the creation and use of the built environment, fashion, and everyday goods, they are pioneering practical solutions grounded in the principles of the circular economy. What distinguishes these projects is their focus on what happens once a building, garment, or object reaches the end of its initial use.

Ultimately, it aims to shift culture toward a new reality: a circular economy that strives for zero waste and zero carbon emissions by prioritising renewable materials, reusing non-renewable resources, and keeping products in use for as long as possible, thereby creating a continuous, regenerative cycle.

All Things Circular: Exploring Sustainable Design Through Hong Kong’s Cultural Lens
‘All Things Circular’, Hong Kong’s first-ever design showcase at Dutch Design Week, now extends to HKDC, bringing the exhibition to the local public for the first time. Co-curated by Roger Wu, Director of Business Development & Projects of HKDC, and Vivienne Yu, multidisciplinary creator, the exhibition addresses urgent global challenges through the lens of circularity and social design, highlighting sustainability deeply embedded in Hong Kong’s cultural values of adaptability, humility, and care. The exhibition reveals how circular design in the city often emerges from necessity and has evolved into a practice that preserves value, minimises waste, and prioritises human needs.

By showcasing local designers’ thoughtful reimagining and repurposing of original materials, the exhibition positions circularity not only as an environmental strategy but also as a social ethic and cultural instinct. The exhibits span a wide range of everyday essentials: from what we eat, what we wear, where we live, how we live, to specific cultural artifacts like ceramics and mahjong tiles. It also features projects focused on inclusive design, such as initiatives improving the lives of the visually impaired and supporting the elderly in enhancing their quality of life. By integrating circularity with inclusivity, the exhibition proposes a holistic approach grounded in continuity, empathy, and shared responsibility, where everyone and everything plays a vital role.

Featuring twelve cutting-edge projects, including biodegradable sugarcane packaging, ceramic glazes made from joss paper ash, fruit peel sneakers, and inclusive fashion for patients and caregivers, ‘All Things Circular’ celebrates objects that renew not only materials but also relationships and dignity.
