Pacific Place, the premier lifestyle destination, together with its neighbour, the vibrant Starstreet Precinct, are transforming into an artful dimension of creativity as part of the exciting art programme lineup within Swire Properties’ Arts Month. Locals and visitors are invited to celebrate the convergence of art and life at both venues with a dynamic and immersive installation by Berlin-based American artist Christine Sun Kim, and a thought-provoking installation by Mexican contemporary artist Gabriel Rico from 21 March to 12 April.
Now in its fourth year as the sole offsite venue for Art Basel Hong Kong’s Encounters, Pacific Place presents Christine Sun Kim’s first ever large-scale commission in Hong Kong. This site-specific installation brings together an ambitious scale and immersive experience of A String of Echo Traps at Park Court. Featuring a large-scale video cube and a newly commissioned floor mural, the installation translates Kim’s distinctive visual language, her exploration of the rhythms and textures of sound, into a striking graphic format.
Echoes and echo chambers serve as powerful metaphors for the Deaf community. The echo connects to the artist’s experience of transmitting communication through an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, similar to interpretation between languages, a message bounces off a surface and changes its form as it travels. For this presentation at Pacific Place, the echo motifs spill across the floor mural, encouraging visitors to challenge how sound operates in society and how oral languages function as social currency.
A String of Echo Traps is presented by WHITE SPACE, supported by Swire Properties, the official Partner of offsite Encounters.
Sculptor and installation artist Gabriel Rico brings his celebrated cactus-themed sculpture I Have Anticipated You II to the artful neighbourhood, Starstreet Precinct. Recognised as one of the most renowned voices in contemporary Latin American art, Rico’s practice is deeply rooted in traditional Mexican culture. In his work, the iconic cactus is reimagined as a symbol of transformation. By placing natural elements together with everyday man-made objects, the installation creates a visually striking scene that feels both playful and slightly surreal.
As part of a series of cactus sculptures, the cactus is more than just a plant, but a place where people project their wishes, dreams and ideas. Everyday items such as coins, steaks, and other objects appear to be growing out of the cactus, transforming it into something entirely new. In I Have Anticipated You II, these unusual combinations encourage passersby to reflect on what we value, how objects shape our lives, and how nature and human culture are closely connected.
Wing Chiu, General Manager of Pacific Place, said “Pacific Place and Starstreet Precinct will once again host extraordinary public art pieces by internationally acclaimed artists as part of the annual Swire Properties Arts Month celebration. This year’s programme is yet another testament to our dedication to nurturing artistic and cultural exchange in the city, and we are thrilled to serve as the exclusive offsite venue for Art Basel Hong Kong’s Encounters for the fourth consecutive year. We look forward to welcoming visitors as they marvel at and engage with these captivating artworks.”
Explore and engage with boundless creativity at Pacific Place and Starstreet Precinct from 21 March to 12 April.
