Since 2022, Tai Kwun’s annual signature programme InnerGlow has transformed the façades and exteriors of the Barrack Block of the former Central Police Station into ambitious large-scale displays of digital animation. In partnership with The Electric Canvas, Australia’s foremost large-scale architectural projection mapping specialist, Tai Kwun once again converts the surface of its visual heritage into a showcase for several generations of Hong Kong artists during this year’s Chinese New Year holidays.
From 26 January to 14 February, Tai Kwun’s outdoor spaces from the Parade Ground to the Prison Yard will erupt with nightly radiance. This year’s feature, Garden of Reflection by the internationally acclaimed local new media artist HUNG Keung, fills Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground with the artist’s singular vision, both deeply devoted to Chinese language and literary culture and equally conversant with contemporary technology.

Running in parallel with InnerGlow will be InnerGlow Searchlight, a curated mentorship initiated through Tai Kwun’s Talent Development Programme, returning for a second year to provide opportunities for student artists in creative media, film and design to conceive and realise innovative concepts on a large scale. Under the experienced guidance of The Electric Canvas and local multimedia artist Ng Tsz Kwan, nine new works by 23 student artists, showcasing the creativity of local university students and graduates, will fill various historic structures in Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard, includingthe PrisonWall, the F Hall and D Hall.

Tai Kwun is delighted to announce InnerGlow’s return for 2025, poised to illuminate the site with captivating 3D mapped projections for the fourth year running. For over two weeks, InnerGlow will set the Parade Ground aglow, lighting up the façade of the Barrack Block with a brilliant visual journey from 6:30pm to 9pm nightly. In tandem, InnerGlow Searchlight will return for the second year, inviting twenty-three student artists to unveil innovative works across more of Tai Kwun’s historic building façades. Reaching into the Lunar New Year, InnerGlow and InnerGlow Searchlight will be displayed from 26 January to 14February 2025.

The programme is made possible with core funding provided by The Hong Kong Jockey Club through its Charities Trust as one of Tai Kwun’s arts and heritage programmes, and CLP Holdings Limited as the Principal Sponsor.
In partnership with The Electric Canvas – Australia’s foremost projection mapping specialists – local new media artist Hung Keung crafts InnerGlow’s centrepiece, Garden of Reflection. Informed by his cutting-edge exploration of Hong Kong literature, calligraphy, and nature, the piece probes the fluid relationship between traditional Chinese characters (Hanzi) and contemporary digital art, engaging in a dialogue that unfolds across time and space. Divided into three themes, each breathes new life onto the Barrack Block’s historic façade, welcoming audiences to contemplate how ancient forms of expression can be reimagined through contemporary technology.

Spilling over onto Pottinger Ramp, Garden of Reflection 2.0 joins a legacy of InnerGlow animations, transforming the entrance to the Parade Ground. This latest animation features characters that continuously morph and wander through ever-vibrant flowers. Together with pieces from the programme’s past, these elements create a sensory tunnel that inducts visitors into the world of InnerGlow. This year’s zodiac sign also joins the procession, twisting and winding its way through an ocean of traditional Chinese motifs.

In its second year, InnerGlow Searchlight affirms Tai Kwun’s commitment to talent development in
the city, uplifting new creatives alongside established artists. Spanning the landmark surfaces of the Prison Wall, F-Hall Studio, and Block 14, InnerGlow Searchlight presents nine works created by 23 student artists, showcasing the creativity of local university students and graduates. Reshaping the site into an expansive creative workshop, participants are encouraged to broaden their artistic practices and enrich their skills in animation development under the seasoned guidance of The Electric Canvas and local multimedia artist Ng Tsz Kwan.

InnerGlow and InnerGlow Searchlight present dazzling technicolour spectacles, offered to the public free of charge nightly. Overflowing with vibrant digital projections, awe-inspiring animations, and immersive moving images specially designed for Hong Kong, this now-annual theatre of lights celebrates the city’s rich heritage while ushering in its boundless future. A mesmerising experience, InnerGlow is the perfect way to welcome the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Snake.
