Yrellag Gallery at Prince Terrace, Central will present the solo exhibition “Anthos Sojourn” by Hong Kong contemporary ink artist Bennata So from November 3 to November 29. The exhibition focuses on the artist’s unique ink techniques to interpret the life cycle of flowers, showcasing the aesthetic realmof “how we embrace our fading years after the prime time” through delicate dialogues between withered petals, textures, and light. An opening reception will be held on November 5 at 5:30 PM, inviting media and art enthusiasts to witness a new chapter in the contemporary inheritance of the Lingnan School of painting.
The Aesthetic Declaration of Fading Flowers
Bennata So’s works break through the purely aesthetic framework of traditional flower-and-bird themes, turning instead to explore the vitality within decay. From the philosophical perspective of “boundless without and within,” she constructs boundless imaginative worlds within the modest space of ink and paper. This exhibition, embodies the sentiment of “the world admires flowers in full bloom, but I alone cherish them as they wither. Each weathered petal once shone with glamor, every wrinkle carves life’s vitality,” presents a persistent dedication to the “beauty of imperfection”, serving as the most significant contemporary annotation in her creative work.
Contemporary Dialogue of the “Layered Colours and Traced Light” Technique The works highlight Bennata So’s unique “Layering colours and tracing light” technique, which builds upon the essence of the Lingnan School while integrating contemporary colour perception. Through layered and blended colors, she captures the interplay of light and shadow upon fading petals, creating a poetic dialogue on paper between traditional ink art and modern aesthetics. This technique not only captures the spirit of ink art but also imbues the floral theme with profound philosophical depth.
The Philosophical Quest of Lingnan Ink Art
A student of Lingnan School master Tam Sing Chuk, Bennata So has long explored the contemporary translation of Chinese philosophy and classical aesthetics. The “Anthos Sojourn” series presented in this exhibition, focuses on the concept where “blooming flowers, a poem is born; falling petals, Zen is woven,” guiding viewers to perceive wholeness within imperfection and witness eternity in decay. Her works are both a celebration of the cycle of life and an aesthetic reflection on contemporary attitudes towards living.
