A Historic Exhibition
Picasso for Asia: A Conversation is not just another art exhibition; it represents a significant milestone in the global art scene. This is the first time that a museum collection from Asia will be in direct conversation with the masterpieces of one of the most influential artists in modern history. Picasso’s works, spanning from the late 1890s to the early 1970s, will be presented alongside works by artists such as Luis Chan, Gu Dexin, Isamu Noguchi, and Tanaami Keiichi. These pieces, selected from the M+ Collections, range from the early twentieth century to the present, creating a rich, intergenerational dialogue.
.
Exploring Picasso’s Legacy Through Asian Lenses
The exhibition’s curatorial approach is both innovative and insightful, exploring complex themes such as the relationship between origin and reception, the dynamics of invention and adaptation, and the interplay between Western and non-Western artistic traditions. Picasso’s enduring influence on global art is examined through the lens of contemporary Asian perspectives, offering a fresh interpretation of his legacy. Highlights of the exhibition include iconic works like The Acrobat (1930), Figures by the Sea (1931), and Massacre in Korea (1951).
A Collaboration of Cultures
The collaboration between M+ and the Musée national Picasso-Paris represents a new model of cultural exchange. By placing Picasso’s works in conversation with Asian contemporary art, the exhibition challenges traditional narratives and fosters a deeper understanding of global visual culture. Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director of M+, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Celebrating the practices of Asian artists by bringing Picasso’s works into this conversation manifests M+’s unique role in creating multilayered dialogues around modern and contemporary art on a global level.”
.
A New Methodology for Exhibiting Picasso
Cécile Debray, President of the Musée national Picasso-Paris, highlights the innovative nature of this partnership. She notes that the exhibition proposes a bold narrative that decouples Picasso’s work from a solely Western perspective, offering a more inclusive and global approach to his artistic legacy. This exhibition not only showcases Picasso’s influence but also expands his audience by situating his work within a broader cultural and historical context.

A Must-See Event in Hong Kong’s Cultural Calendar
