Arnold Schwarzenegger, the famous movie star and former California Governor, found himself in a bit of trouble recently when he was detained at the Munich Airport in Germany. The reason for his detainment? A unique Audemars Piguet watch that he was carrying with him. Schwarzenegger was on his way to Austria to auction off the luxury timepiece for charity when he was nabbed by customs officers for failing to declare the watch and complete the appropriate paperwork.

According to reports, the actor was never asked to fill out a declaration form but immediately agreed to pay the customs duty on the watch, which amounted to around US$38,000 (€35,000). However, paying the duty proved to be a challenge as the airport card machine was not working, and the amount was too high to be withdrawn from an ATM. After some back and forth, customs officials found a working card machine, and Schwarzenegger was eventually allowed to leave with the watch.

The watch in question is a one-of-a-kind Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph. It is an anniversary edition (Ref. 25770SN) that pays homage to the “End of Days” model that Schwarzenegger co-designed with Audemars Piguet in 1999. The watch features a 43 mm black ceramic case, a matching ceramic bezel, and a mega tapisserie dial with three subdials. It also has white-gold hour markers, hands coated in black nickel with yellow luminescence, and a tachymeter scale. However, what sets this particular watch apart is its caseback. The skeletonized movement of the watch features a gold rotor engraved with an image of Schwarzenegger in his iconic bodybuilder pose and the text “Arnold Classic.” This special edition watch is one of only 20 in existence, making it highly exclusive.

Despite the initial hiccup at the airport, the watch was still set to be auctioned off at the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative’s charity dinner in Kitzbühel, Austria. The auction took place as planned, with a starting price of approximately US$54,300 (€50,000). However, the auction result exceeded expectations. The unique Audemars Piguet watch ended up selling for nearly three times its estimated price, fetching around US$300,000 (€270,000). The total amount raised at the auction, including the proceeds from the watch sale, reached approximately US$1.4 million (€1.3 million), setting a new record for the organisation.

The incident of Arnold Schwarzenegger being detained at the airport over the one-of-a-kind Audemars Piguet watch brought attention not only to the actor but also to the charity auction he was participating in. The proceeds from the auction go to support the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, which aims to address environmental issues and combat the climate crisis. While the detainment may have caused a slight delay, it ultimately generated publicity for the auction and contributed to the success of the event.
